Two South East Coast Ambulance Service
(SECAmb) members of staff from Worthing are bidding to raise
£10,000 for two local charities by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in
 Kenya next year.
Paramedic Carley Gould and ambulance
technician Tammy Page are looking for support from
the community for a task that will test both their mental and
physical capability over 10 days, in July 2017, climbing to Uhuru
Point, the peak of the mountain at a colossal 5,895 metres.
With just a year to prepare, their
training has already started on the local South Downs. The pair
also recently completed a training week in North Wales, climbing
Mount Tryfan as well as the neighbouring climb of Mount
 Snowdon.
“We had quite a welcome to Wales when
our tent was demolished by 90mph winds on our first night,” said
34-year-old Tammy. “It meant we had to buy a new tent but
fortunately the weather then relented and we had glorious weather
 for our climb of Snowdon.”
Tammy and 32-year-old paramedic Carley
work together as colleagues and have also become close friends.
Their chosen charities are Chestnut Tree House and St Barnabas
House in Sussex. Their work for SECAmb means they have close
contact with both patients and families alike who need the
extensive services of the two charities.
Tammy added: “We see the invaluable
comfort and care they provide. Over the years we have built some
great relationships with the staff at these units and have been
honoured to assist in palliative care. They have, in our eyes,
become essential for end-of-life support. St Barnabas is special
for me as I have had a couple of relatives cared for in their
finals days there and they do wonderful work.”
Both are voluntary organisations which
rely heavily on the generosity, help and support of the people of
Sussex. Chestnut Tree House treat, support, and care for all
 children with life limiting disabilities.
Since 1973 St Barnabas House remains
the primary centre in Worthing for adults with cancer and other
life changing illnesses. They offer continued help and support from
for symptom management, respite care, or end of life.
