Any member of an NHS board must formally disclose any personal or financial interests that could potentially influence their decision-making on a particular matter, ensuring transparency and preventing conflicts of interest when voting on issues related to the NHS.

Key points about board member declarations of interest:
  • Purpose:

To identify potential conflicts of interest where a board member might benefit personally from a decision made by the board.

  • What to declare:

This could include financial interests in companies that provide services to the NHS, personal relationships with individuals involved in NHS contracts, or professional affiliations that could impact decision-making.

  • Process:

Board members are usually required to submit a declaration of interest form at the start of their appointment and update it regularly if any new interests arise.

  • Management of conflicts:
If a conflict of interest is declared, the board member may need to abstain from voting on the relevant issue or take other steps to mitigate the conflict.
