For new mum Chloe, finding her five-week-old daughter struggling to breathe was one of the scariest moments of her entire life.
Chloe was at her home in Romney Marsh, Kent on 23 January 2025 when she suddenly found five-week-old Autumn blue, floppy and gasping for every breath.
Chloe made the desperate call to 999 where she was connected to Emergency Medical Advisor, Rain Gavin.
Rain triaged the call as a category 1 emergency, with crewmates Mandy Nash and Katy Ratchford arriving to Chloe’s home in five minutes. Big sister Willow bravely opened the door and let Mandy and Katy in where they found a very poorly Autumn.
Autumn had developed a rash and had been suffering with a cold in the days prior. After their observations, they found Autumn had Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) which is a contagious virus that infects the nose, throat, and lungs, and can be very serious for babies and the elderly.
The pair were able to stabalise Autumn before taking her for a short stay at the William Harvey Hospital for further emergency treatment.
Recently, Chloe and her two little ones Autumn and Willow were invited to the Trust’s Ashford Make Ready Centre where they were able to reunite with Mandy, Katy and Rain in more positive circumstances.
In babies, RSV is a common cause of a type of chest infection called bronchiolitis. This can cause breathing problems and may need to be treated in hospital. If you notice any of the following symptoms in your child, please call 999.
“In what must have been the scariest moment of her life, Chloe did a fantastic job of providing a clear description of the situation, enabling us to assign resources as quickly as possible.” Said Rain.
“It was fantastic to create a positive ending to what was one of the scariest times in my entire life. Said Chloe. I can’t thank them enough for getting help to us as quickly as they did.”
“Having the privilege of reuniting with Chloe and her family really made our week. Said Katy. “I’m so glad that Mandy, Rain and I were able to help them and that we all wish them the best for their future.”
