Just two months after safely delivering their baby in the back of an ambulance, new parents, Alex and Hope were reunited with the team at Dartford ambulance station where they thanked them for the safe delivery of newborn, Kai.

The unforgettable moment unfolded in the early hours of 6 September when Hope, 38 weeks pregnant, began experiencing intense pain.

Already parents to 18-month-old Isaac, the couple called 999 and were connected to Emergency Medical Advisor, (EMA), Amy Smy, who triaged the call as a Category One emergency. Resource Dispatcher, Sarah Weller immediately dispatched two double-crewed ambulances to the couple’s home.

Emergency Care Support Worker Kieran Case, Operational Team Leader, Aimee Pankhurst, Newly Qualified Paramedic, Joshua Pickles, and Paramedic, Shannon Niblett arrived at the home within minutes, initially planning to take Hope to the hospital, but the team had to change plans when Kai decided to make an early arrival.

Thanks to the team, Kai was safely delivered shortly before 4am on 6 September 2024, and Hope was able to remain at home with Kai and Isaac, without the need for a hospital stay.

Joshua said: “Within what felt like seconds of getting Hope into the ambulance, we could see Kai’s head. We knew that we were doing this in the back of the ambulance and not making our way to the hospital.”

Aimee said: “Hope was amazing and before we knew it, Kai had made a safe arrival into the world. We were all so happy for them.”

New dad, Alex said, “I cannot say enough good things about the crews and how they helped us in what was a very difficult moment. They put our minds at ease, acted decisively, and safely delivered our baby.”

Hope said: “It was lovely to be able to meet the team in a calmer situation, and to thank them for all their help that morning. It’s amazing how many people were involved in ensuring Kai arrived in the world safely.”

Amy said: “It was really special to be able to meet the family and to hear about how well Kai is doing. As an EMA, it’s rare we hear the outcome once we’ve ended the call, so I’m really pleased that this call had the best outcome, and I was able to meet the family.”

Sarah said: “It was a real pleasure to be a part of Hope and Alex’s story, and I was over the moon to be invited to meet them in person, as well as big brother, Isaac who was peacefully sleeping upstairs when his brother made an entrance into the world.”
