A significant step towards reducing plastic waste has been taken by the Trust with the introduction of reusable travel mugs for colleagues, marking the end of single-use cups across all sites starting from 1 December.

This initiative, which originated as a concept from our Green Network, and has been driven by our colleagues, is part of the Trust’s Green Plan, is a key element of its commitment to sustainability and supporting the NHS’s target of becoming a ‘Net Zero’ health service.

In 2023 alone, the Trust consumed more than 514,500 disposable cups, resulting in annual carbon emissions of 56,606 CO2e. The sheer scale of this waste highlighted the urgent need for action, prompting the Green Plan Steering Group to spearhead the roll-out of eco-friendly, spill-proof travel mugs for all staff, students, volunteers, and contractors.

The transition to reusable mugs, which have been rigorously tested for durability and practicality in Trust vehicle holders, is a direct response to extensive feedback from site audits and staff surveys, identifying a clear demand for more sustainable practices which align with broader NHS goals.

This announcement comes after the recent introduction of three fully electric vehicles as part of plans to reduce carbon emissions and introduce zero-emission vehicles to the fleet.

SECAmb Executive Director for Strategic Planning and Transformation, David Ruiz-Celada said: “I am really pleased that we’re taking another proactive step to reduce our carbon emissions and do better for the environment.

“The impact of single-use plastics on our planet is undeniable, and it's essential that we take responsibility where we can. By introducing these reusable mugs, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also setting a positive example for our colleagues and the communities we serve. Every small step adds up, and this is one of many we’re taking as part of our Green Plan."
