A woman who had a seizure at the wheel of her car was recently able to reunite with the crew who helped to get her to safety.

Sue Norris, now aged 74, from Wainscott was driving across Rochester Bridge on 9 August 2020 when she suffered a seizure at the wheel and collided with a road sign.

Thanks to the quick thinking of a passerby, they immediately called 999 and within four minutes, Operational Team Leader, Nathan Whalley, Paramedic, Sally Hetterley and Newly Qualified Paramedic, Jace Simpson were at the scene of the accident with Sue who was unconscious.

Four years on from the incident, Sue was determined to reunite with Nathan, Sally and Jace, and visited our Medway Make Ready Centre in Gillingham to thank them for everything they did that evening to help her.

As well as meeting the crew, Sue was given a tour of our emergency operations centre (EOC) and was shown where the call came into, and how the resource was dispatched to her.

Following the seizure, Sue spent one week in Medway Maritime Hospital recovering, and was finally able to get back to driving two years after the accident.

Sue said: “I had mentioned to my sister that I wasn’t feeling myself a few days before, and from then on I really have no memory of the day and the accident.”

Sue said: “I was over the moon to reunite with my Nathan, Sally and Jace. I felt slightly nervous before, but they really put me at ease, and I am so glad I was able to spend time with them. I really cannot thank them enough.”

Sally added: “I am so glad that Sue reached out and asked to meet us. It’s heartwarming to know that we were able to help her in her time of need and I was so glad to be able to reunite with her.”

Jace added: “This was my first time reuniting with a patient and so it made it even more special that it was with Sue. It was lovely to see her doing so well and to hear about her family.”

Nathan said: “It was an absolute pleasure to reunite with Sue. I’m so happy that it was my crew mates and I that were able to help her that evening and I’m thrilled that she is back to good health.”
