Two young brothers from Kent have been recognised for their incredible bravery after they called 999 when their mum collapsed.
The quick thinking and resourcefulness of Ronnie, eight and Robbie, six got their mum, Molli, the help she needed, as the brothers put their best teamwork to the test.
Shortly before 9.30am on 26 November, the pair were at home with their two-year-old brother, Vinnie, when Molli became unconscious after fainting and hitting her head on the kitchen counter.
After not receiving any response from their poorly mum, Ronnie made the courageous decision to call 999. Guided by Emergency Medical Advisors, Brogan Smith and Jane Jenkins, Ronnie provided details about the situation and received instructions on how to try to wake his mother. Six-year-old Robbie also stepped up to fetch a nearby neighbour for assistance following instructions from Brogan and Jane.
Paramedic, Bacher Baccouche and Trainee Associate Ambulance Practitioner, Emma Reilly arrived at Molli’s home shortly after and stabilised her before transporting Molli to a local hospital for further treatment. Thanks to the boys’ quick actions and the support of our teams, Molli has recovered well.
To congratulate them on their bravery, Ronnie and Robbie, along with their proud mum, nan and little brother, were invited to SECAmb’s Thanet Make Ready Centre for a special presentation.
The boys received certificates from SECAmb Chief Executive, Simon Weldon acknowledging their efforts, along with a tour of the facility where they learned more about when and why to call 999.
Brogan said: “This was the first time that I had taken a 999 call from a child, and to say I was impressed would be an understatement! Ronnie and Robbie really did their mum proud.”
Molli said: “I couldn’t believe that they were able to tell Brogan and Jane our address as we haven’t lived here that long. I’m so proud of them both for what they did for me.”
The boys’ grandmother Tara said: “I am so proud of them both I am lost for words. I really could cry thinking about it, just knowing how worried they were about their mum to ring 999.”
Jane added: “It was lovely to meet Ronnie, Robbie and their family recently. It’s rare that children know how to act in an emergency and so I’m really glad that we were able to recognise this for them.”
