A routine welfare visit took a frightening turn for 41-year-old Victoria Page when she discovered her 86-year-old grandmother, Janet unresponsive on the bathroom floor.

What was meant to be a quick check-in before Victoria started work very quickly turned into a race against time to get her nan help. Thankfully, the swift response of SECAmb colleagues made all the difference.

To show their appreciation, Janet, a lifelong Folkestone resident, alongside her two daughters Sue and Julie, and granddaughter, Victoria reunited with the team of ambulance colleagues who helped her.

The incident unfolded shortly before 7.30 am on Thursday 24 October when Victoria found Janet unresponsive. She immediately called 999 and was guided through performing CPR by Emergency Medical Advisor, Maddie Race. Meanwhile, Resource Dispatcher, Jordan Bray was coordinating a team of colleagues to respond to Janet’s home.

Moments before Emergency Responders Zella Nerssessian and Kevin Brown arrived, Janet regained consciousness thanks to Victoria’s quick actions.

They were soon joined by Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) colleagues, Rob Kendall-Wallace, Liam Kirby, and Grace Wilmshurst, who together stabilised Janet before transporting her to William Harvey Hospital. Janet has since made a full recovery.

To thank the team, Janet, Victoria, and their family visited SECAmb’s Ashford Make Ready Centre. Over a cup of tea, they had the chance to personally thank the team and tour one of the Trust’s HART bases, where they learned more about the specialist skills and equipment used in emergencies that the team responds to.

To provide peace of mind for the future, Janet now has a sensor in her home that can detect falls, offering reassurance to Victoria and her family.

Janet shared her gratitude during the visit, saying: "I can’t thank them enough for what they did that day. They’ll always have my gratitude, and I’m so proud of Victoria for staying calm and doing everything right."

Victoria said: “I couldn't have asked for better people to not only help my Nan but also help calm me down too. I just want to thank them all from the bottom of my heart.”

For the team, meeting Janet again was a rare experience. HART Team Leader, Rob Kendall-Wallace said: "It’s not often we get to meet patients after the fact, so this was a lovely moment for all of us. Seeing Janet looking so well is a reminder of why we do what we do."

Maddie added: “It was really emotional for me to be able to meet Victoria after speaking to her on the phone and guiding her through how to perform CPR on her grandmother. I’m so glad Janet has made a full recovery.”
