A 28-year-old man from Maidstone, Kent has been reunited with the ambulance team who helped him following a serious road traffic collision that left him with a partially amputated foot.
Wojciech Ochman was riding his motorbike to work on the morning of 24 October 2024 when he was involved in a collision with a car in Maidstone. The impact left him with devastating injuries to his foot.
A quick-thinking passerby dialled 999, and Resource Dispatcher, Joshua Becconsall coordinated an emergency response with Associate Ambulance Practitioner James Benger and Critical Care Paramedic Phillip Richardson dispatched to the scene.
James and Phill sedated Wojciech and carefully packaged his injured foot before transporting him to King’s College Hospital in London. There, surgeons performed three complex operations in a bid to reconstruct and save as much of his foot as possible.
On the way to hospital, Wojciech, still in shock but grateful, made a promise that he would come back and thank the team personally, as well as bringing their favourite food.
True to his word, after months of recovery and rehabilitation, Wojciech visited James, Phill and Joshua at Paddock Wood Make Ready Centre armed with pizza as a token of his appreciation.
Now looking ahead to being fitted with an orthotic shoe, Wojciech says he feels optimistic about the future.
Wojciech said “I owe these guys everything,” he said. “They kept me calm, did as much as they could to save my foot and got me to hospital. I’ll never forget it. It was a big milestone in my recovery for me to reunite with them.”
Critical Care Paramedic, Phill said “Wojciech’s outlook on life is a true testament to his resilience following such a life-changing injury. It was a real pleasure to reunite with him, and I’m looking forward to following his continued recovery.”
AAP James said “Wojciech is an absolute gentleman. It was fascinating to sit down with him and hear more about his journey since the accident.”
Resource Dispatcher, Joshua said “It was great to finally meet Wojciech in person and hear more about the incident that brought him into our care. I’m proud to have played a part in making sure he got the help he needed when he needed it most.”
