Heartstart

During the past year, we have been working closely with the British Heart Foundation (BHF), the national charity which pioneers research, vital prevention activity and quality care and support for everyone living with heart disease.

Through the Heartstart UK initiative, the BHF helps to establish training schemes which teach people what to do in a medical emergency.

Within the south east coast area, the BHF have funded two Community Resuscitation defibrillation officers, which help to support SECAmb to implement Basic Life Support within schools, following the national Heartstart programme.

The Heartstart programme aims to teach simple skills needed in a life-threatening emergency and covers areas such as:

  • assessing an unconscious patient,
  • performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • dealing with choking
  • serious bleeding
  • helping someone that may be having a heart attack

To date over 4,000 children within Surrey, Sussex and Kent have been trained and the target for this year is a further 7,000, concentrating within areas of high Coronary Heart Disease.

Please contact one of our Community Resuscitation officers if you want to find out more about the Heartstart programme locally:
